Q: What is karate?
A: Karate is a Japanese martial art, or fighting method, of unarmed
combat, involving a variety of techniques including blocks, strikes,
kicks, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations.
The word karate is a combination of two Japanese characters:
kara, meaning empty, and te, meaning hand; thus, karate means "empty
hand."

Q: What is the Chiltern Karate Association?
A: The Chiltern Karate Association (CKA), established in the late 80s,
is a traditional Shotokan Karate club, with training locations in the
South Bucks area.
Clubs are in Amersham, Aylesbury, Chalfont St. Giles, Chesham and Denham.
CKA is a member of the English Karate Governing Body (E.K.G.B.).

Q: Who can practice karate?
A: Anyone can train in karate. The CKA was established with the aim
of promoting high quality Shotokan Karate within a friendly nurturing
environment. It is our view that karate should be for everyone, young
and old, able and not so able.
Whilst we do not provide specific courses, we do welcome children aged
8+.

Q: Do I need to be fit to train?
A: No, but one of the benefits of karate is an improvement in fitness.
By this we mean your overall physical condition, which includes endurance,
strength, flexibility, and speed all of which will be developed through
regular training.

Q: What are the other benefits of karate?
A: Obviously self-defence is key benefit. However students find that
there are many other benefits to studying karate, such as building self-confidence
and self-development from learning something new.

Q: Will I get hurt?
A: With any physical activity, there is always a danger of injury. However,
during the early stages of karate training students will only ever be
asked to do basic sparring in controlled circumstances. Injuries are
very few and far between.

Q: Do I need any special clothing?
A: No, just loose clothing and bare feet. After your first grading it
is natural for you to want
to purchase a Karate suit (Gi), this can be purchased through the club.

Q: What are the costs involved?
A: A 6-week introductory course costs £18 (£15 for children).
After that, you pay as
and when you train. The current cost is £4 (£3 for under
16s)
