Meaning of kata :
Ji is the abbreviation of the Sanskrit word JIHI
meaning compassion or benevolence. The kata is also believed to be named
after a Budhist saint of the same name.
Origins of kata :
Thought to be a kata from Tomari-te although the kata
is also known to have been practised by Shuri-te. The kata is believed
to have originated from China. This is re-inforced by the Chinese salutation
Jiai no kamae at the start and finish of the kata. Sensei
Funakoshi referred to the kata as Shokyo.
