Jion is believed to be the katas original name.
Meaning of kata :
Sensei Funakoshi in Karate-do Kyohan indicates that
the kata was named after a Budhist saint of the same name. Ji is the
abbreviation of the Sanskrit word JIHI meaning compassion or benevolence.
Origins of kata :
The origins of JION are uncertain but it is believed
to be connected with the Jion-Je temple in China a theory strengthened
by the salutation at the start and finish.
The kata is also known to have been practised equally
by Shuri-te and Tomari-te.
