First Cause
Origins of kata :
The Taikyoku kata come in three forms, Shodan, Nidan and

Sensei Funakoshi speaks of the kata in his book Karate-do
Kyohan as follows :
If they are practised regularly, they will result in
an even development of the body and in a sound ability to bear the body correctly.
Moreover, the student who has gained proficiency in basic techniques and understands
the essence of the Taikyoku kata will appreciate the real meaning of the maxim,
"In karate, there is no advantage in the first attack". It is for
this reason I have given them the name Taikyoku.
